The Dark Knight Rises

Warner Bros and Christopher Nolen have announced the two lead “baddies” in the next Batman flick. He also has settled on their actors.

Anne Hathaway has been cast as Catwoman. Tom Hardy (Inception) is set to play the South American brainy, muscle-bound “super steroid” freak Bane.

As a comic book fan who came up in the “silver age,” I have always loved Batman, despite in my earliest years being a diehard Marvel fanboy. I loved Neil Adam’s run in the 70’s, and Nolan’s Batman has a close resemblance to that incarnation. Before Nolan, my favorite of the films was the first Tim Burton effort, and also the Val Kilmer Batman (my only three problems with that one being a Robin who is too old, a two-face who is too ugly on the normal side of his face, and a Gotham City that is just too wrapped in neon – even the damn guns had neon tubing on them? Sheesh.)

Nolan has brought a great sense of realism to the world of Batman, and the first film was a fantastic origin story that hit all the right notes with comic fans and the “unbeliever” general public.

I really did love that first Christian Bale Batman film, and the second had a lot of great moments. I thought Two Face was kind of wasted (a criminal career that lasted around 20 minutes. Hardly worthy of entry into the Rogue’s Gallery down in the Batcave to be sure.) I think the new actress playing the love interest was a very strange choice. And I don’t *gasp* think that the late Heath Ledger’s Joker portrayal was all that extraordinary (although I do like a more toned down Joker, as he was often just too giddy and silly in some former incarnations). Overall, I think they should have shortened the film by around 20 minutes (something I say about a lot of movies. I’m looking at you, LOTR). It was just too much for one theater sitting.

So, how will Catwoman and Bane fit into the more realistic, non-comic bookey “Nolanverse?” Well, Catwoman was kind of a given anyway. The question is, which way will they go with her. The crazy leather bitch made famous by Michelle Pfieffer in Burton’s Trannyfest Batman Returns? The dominatrix prostitute of the 80’ and 90’s? Personally, I think a good take for Nolan to fit her well into his world is to make her more like her high society cat burglar persona from the olden days.

The Batman Animated Adventures from the 90’s did that with her, and did not have to stoop to making her a crazed, psychosexual being like Burton did. She actually pretty much had it together. I liked that version. Throw in that versions animal activism, and you’ve got yourself a reason to have Anne Hathaway bare her teeth and throw down with some martial acrobatics.

Bane? I dunno. I think it is a shit move. This was never that fascinating a character, and he only got into the consciousness of the fanboys by being the foe that literally broke Batman’s back. He also is not part of the old rogue’s gallery, which I think should have a focus on the old. A Nolan version of The Penguin (a non-mutated version, please), Riddler, or even bringing back Two Face would have been a much better choice. Nolan would have to take Bane to an entirely new vision for me to get behind it. I think he is a lame character.

This is most likely Nolan’s last Batman, and I think it is a shame that we will not see the return of Liam Neeson’s Ras Al Ghul, or at least his daughter Talia (who would be a perfect fit for the exotic and currently very popular Mila Kunis from Black Swan. Hell, maybe Anne Hathaway could have pulled off Talia) during his tenure.

OK, the film is at least a couple of years away from theaters. Sue me, I like talking about Batman.

  1. You should check out Bane's wikipedia page. I was surprised to read that he's one of Batmans "most intelligent and physically powerful foes". Never woulda' guessed the guy had smarts!

Also mentions that he was semi-reformed and there was a time when he and Bruce thought Thomas Wayne was father to both of them.

  2. Jay: I still think what the producers of the Batman Animated series said about him is about right

"...Bane made his animated debut in Batman: The Animated Series episode "Bane", even though producers were reluctant to use him as they felt his comic incarnation was too gimmicky..."

The Wiki also mentions that the original intent was for this to be like an evil Doc Savage, which would have been awesome. A strong guy in Luche Libra tights and mask whom they later say "...hey, let's also make him smart! Won't that be cool? A strong smart guy in tights and wrestiling mask!

Naw, I still think it's lame, although I'm guessing Nolan is going to go with a less comicy look. Really, I hope this isn't Spider-Man 3, I really do.

  4. I would like to see Killer Croc as the villain or Manbat. There are several big time foes in Batman's rogue gallery that don't seem to make the feature film cut. OK, I'm a comics fanboy too ;).

  5. Bane is a surprise. He feels dated to me, very 90s in a bad way. Catwoman will be a piece of cake, though.

  6. Bane, ugh, I hate that character. He was invented just to break Batman's back. Just a gimmick to move comics. Like inventing Doomsday to kill Superman. I hate it when them create characters with no prior history in the comic and jam them in there just to justify a marketing manuver.

You know what I want? I want Batman movie that looks like Sky Captain. Sepia-black and white, shot and paced like a movie from the 30's, with a two-fisted pulp Batman who really enjoys his work.

  7. Shinob: Anne's involvement in the role is the main reason I'd like to see the classier, less insane Catwoman.
John: Croc would be cool, and easily fit in the Nolanverse (having a real life skin condition and all). Manbat would be a step away from the reality, but I can actually see him in reality. Would probably be a fairly frightening version. A real challenge for this lifelike Batman.
EG: I bet you that if they took more of a que from the 90's animated series, we would have gotten something similar to what you describe.
I think they are trying to be too reaslistic with this Batman. A more outrageous scientific bad guy would break out of that a good bit.

  8. Brunomac, thinking of the animated series, remember the tragic take on Mr Freeze? Patrick Stewart was originally cast to play Mr Freeze in that last, really bad movie in the first series. Batman and Robin?

He wisely backed out once he realized the script was a farce and schwarzenegger took the role.

A more adult movie with Stewart as a tragic shakespearian sort of Mr Freeze would have been wonderful.

  9. Can't say Im the biggest fan of Bane or Catwomen, but I do have faith that Chris Nolan( and his incredible cinematographer Wally Pfister) is gonna do it justice. I'm still hoping that rumor of Hugo Strange as Nolan always likes to use two villains( and no I consider Catwomen to be that much of of a villain).

  10. EG: That cartoon take on Mister Freeze was incredible. Very sympathetic character. They tried that in the film, but too much stupid shit ("...get da heroes!") ruined it. Too bad they didn't take that film seriously, because I think Ah-Nuld could have pulled off a more serious Freeze. NO COLD PUNS!
Crow: Hugo would be an interesting but great choice. Just like Ras Al Ghul, he's a long-time character (Al Ghul goes back to the Adams days, right?)he's a great foe that nobody who knows comics would ever have heard about. I think the Batman animated series used Hugo, but if I recall that version didn't come off so great (if I'm thinking of the right character from the cartoon).

  11. Hugo Strange is the main badguy in the new Arkham City videogame( and in the trailer too) so if he's not that well known now, he certainly will be when the game comes out. I'm just hoping Nolan will use him as I think he would make a great follow up to the Joker. A buffed-out, Sigmund Freud looking lunatic who not only knows Batman's real identity, but what's to emulate him as well. It just seems like the kind of villain a guy like Chris Nolan would gravitate too.

  13. Crow: I like Hugo as a big strong and also smart guy over Bane fo' sho'.
Clovis: A couple of less puns and Arnold's Freeze could fit well in a serious Nolanverse IMO. They (the douche bag producers) of that particular film wanted the wisecracking Otto Preminger of the old Batman TV show. But I do think that would work to a degree in movie with a more serious tone. A big laughing bully of a killer guy - always scary. "Get da heroes!"
