"That porn chick slew my elf!"

I said "slew," right? Whew!

Zak Sabbath, an avant garde artist, activist, and performer in several “alternative” adult videos (I’m not sure “porn star” should apply to Zak, but I guess that is subjective) has a blog page hit on his hands with his Playing D&D with Porn Stars site. How could he not with a title like that? Not to take anything from Zak; he seems intelligent and capable when it comes to the usual niche talk about gaming. But there can be no doubt that his blogs popularity has more to do with the fact that he knows porn girls, strippers, tattoo artists, and other alternative types than his post looking at what monsters start with the letter “f”. The fact is, having grown up here in Venice Beach and living in LA my entire life, I have known a pretty good variety of these sorts myself. But for Zak these type of people orbit around the things he is into, and more power to him for getting some of them to game with him.

With the video series I Hit it With My Axe at The Escapist, we get a glimpse into the actual gaming Zak does, namely, Zak’s DM’ing for a motley crew of underground misfits, including a hair dresser, a stripper (who doesn’t look much like the glammed up strippers at most higher end clubs), some punk rock guy you barely get a glimpse of, and a couple of “name” starlets. One is Kimberly Kane, a name I had actually never heard of, but Is apparently the winner of several AVN awards for Gang Bangs and facials and all that great stuff. Also Sasha Grey, a name I have heard of, who I have to admit seems like a gimmicky tack-on to the entire proceedings. I didn’t get the impression she was there because she wanted to play D&D. I kind of doubt she had ever heard of the game before that day. Outside of Sasha (who has a great “girl next door look” similar to that pregnant chick from “Juno”), none of the group are the good looking cutie dolls of mainstream porn, but seem more likely involved in labia piercing and nipple chain goth porn that doesn’t usually show up on shelves next to the latest opus’ from more big name stars. I suppose I shouldn’t say, because I haven’t seen anything with any of these people in them (and believe me I watch my fair share), but as far as my tastes go I like girls with much less of a “hard” street look.

In the background of the very small room that the game takes place in, a sort of wary looking dude sits on a bed and reads Zak’s comic collection, looking up occasionally to scrutinize the proceedings. He is the boyfriend of one of the girls, and his very presence outside of the game seems to indicate to me he is there more like the guy who goes with a stripper to a bachelor party – there to watch out for the girls interests and protect her. His presence there really give me the impression that at least one girl is there more as a publicity thing than as a player. Kimberly, however, does come across as a seasoned player.

We don’t get a ton of idea of the game play, but Zak at least sounds like a capable DM.At one point he starts the game of saying “let’s skip the usual do what you want city stuff, and cut to the chase.” All us DM’s have been there, so you for sure get a “shared experience” vibe from that. But other people’s game are rarely all that interesting to us, so the gimmick here has great importance towards the number of people who have watched and commented on the video. Hopefully we’ll get more detail on the gameplay itself in future eps, or even better some of the girls will start taking their clothes off and making out. Either or.

I have to say the camera work and editing are total shit. No bones about it. Sure, it’s nice to have a Blair Witch thing going on, but the point should be to see more of the gaming and get more of an idea of the characters and situations. But bottom line – this is just another project by a guy with a lot of irons in the fire. Of course this is totally gimmicky, but the truth is Zak does play D&D with some porn-related folk. I’d like to think that Sasha would show up to a game that had no cameras, but I seriously doubt it. But even without Sasha, the whole thing does hold interest for some of us who would like some actual pornie babes at their games. All I get to my games are good girls who only know of “facials” as something you get while you’re getting a pedicure.

Over the last few days there has been some kind of controversy in the old school community regarding this videos presence on The Escapist. I really don’t have time to do all the research, but I guess some folks are up in arms because gaming is a “kids” thing, and sure, that is where most of us start our gaming life. But I for sure have no problem with it (I don’t have kids, nor do I want to game with them), and the video itself has nothing salacious about it (sad to say). It’s just some lower end adult industry people playing D&D. Nothing more.

I want to say finally that from what I understand Zak has a few charities that he is personally involved in, and not just on a “wish I could do something about this” level. He actually donates sizable amounts of money from his endeavors to these charities, so he isn’t just talking the talk. If you give money to a cause, you ain’t no poser.

  1. I think the hoopla is over whelming, but then I live in Quebec, or "Sin City North" (though we were famous for our sin long before Las Vegas was a scratch in Bugsy's brain ;) ) and as such am far more tolerant of the whole "adult entertainment" thing.

I think the controversy will pass in time, or at least I hope it will.

Oh yeah, and as a 21 year veteran of the film industry, I agree the editing and camera work was not good, but I imagine it will improve with time.

    Cheers!

  2. I must be living in a hole--what to controverse? A guy playing D&D with some girls, most of whom are sex performers, but don't do any of that while playing D&D?

    I be confused.

  3. Well, it's not Kronenberg (@Aslan) but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt (waiting per his request for about 5th episode or so). @Brunomac, thanks once again for your very honest review, by virtue of that alone it's the best I've read yet so far. I've come to expect nothing less from this blog and you never disappoint.

  4. I've never heard of Quebec being "sin city" anything ... no offense man but if your not Amsterdam, or somewhere in Thailand or the Philippines ... you have nothing on Vegas. Lots of places USED to be wild and wooly :) Ok that is all the flaming I will do (and it was a joke btw ... I lived in Vegas for 10 years so its old hometown pride coming through). Anyway I think anyone who legitimately is doing anything to promote face to face tabletop gaming these days gets my support. There is a huge amount of elitism and denominational version wars BS going on and I could care less what some blog-dork's (myself included ... I'll be the first to admit my opinion is as useful as an asshole ... good for passing all kinds of shit through) opinion is on whatever version of D&D vs. 4E is. Bottom line is they are all RPGs and whatever version people play if its pen and paper table top ... its good and we should all be supporting our fellow gamers. As for the porn connection here ... who cares ... I personally am an atheist and an occasional consumer of porn (as 99.999% of adult males are in this world) so I say WTF ... more power to him! Sasha Grey rocks btw :)

  6. bulette: so..you only like my blog when your drinking? Well, that's ok with me! I think everybody should sink a few before looking at anything I might do!

  7. @Lord of Excess, do some research about Montreal and then talk about whether this place is one of the sex capitals of the world (and has been for well over a century+).

Go ahead, I will wait. :)

Now that the mutual flaming is over, let's get back to why people are being far too uptight on this whole issue.

In the end, D&D/RPGing are not "just for kids!" the way some are saying, in fact they are for everyone which means like movies/music/books/tv/etc... there will be some that is good for kids and some that is definitely not for kids.

  8. > But there can be no doubt that his blogs popularity has more to do with the fact that he knows porn girls, strippers, tattoo artists, and other alternative types...

Having read his blog from the beginning I can say there is doubt. People might come cause of the title, they stay for the content. Look through comments, you see many along the lines of "wow, your writing and insights are amazing and not what I expected from title".

Also, AFAIK from reading Zak's blog posts all players were players before any idea of a 5min video series had crossed anyone's mind. There's in fact now two campaigns the real one that has been going on for long time and the other real one they film.

I'm tired of correcting your assumptions. You can go read Zak's blog to find out what/why Sasha Grey is there.

  9. To me the bottom line is who cares if his blog is popular because there is a porn connection. Look at any "popular" blog and you'll see that most of them aren't popular because they are so damn well written. Most it seems like its all in the name of the blog ... or just luck ... or the shear amount of posting they do, etc. I think if you take the porn related posts out of that blog and change the title ... it would still be a decent blog. A professional Blog worthy of international attention? No. But still a legitimate blog about RPG/Tabletop gaming.

As for Montreal ... seriously man ... I was being facetious, I'll take your word for it that its legitimately worthy of being globally renowned as a good place to get quality whores ... and if so its a good place indeed :) I really agree with the notion that the one size fits all RPG is lame and by extension the one size fits all gaming blog is too. Its the same thing that is going on with OSR in general ... there is so much "this system is the best" ... "that system sucks" back and forth going on. If you want sex in your game and like a blog that has some porn actresses playing D&D ... cool ... if your offended don't watch/follow. If you love OSR ... cool! If you love 4E cool! If you hate whatever system ... one is entitled to one's opinion but they don't need to be a self righteous jerk about it. Hermit-Nardery is lame ... enlightening people with logic and extolling the virtues of the things one loves is by far the superior form of communication. Just my worthless two cents though ... ;)

  10. No need to apologize to me, just returned the hometown defense like you did, hence the :) I added at the end ;)

As for this whole porn blog/D&D thing... I think everyone has pointed out enough reasons his blog qualifies as a gaming one way more than a porn one.

I am just stunned at the amount of OSR blogs that are calling it quits after this kerfuffle.

  11. What I think I need to know now is - how long of a flight is it to Montreal?

I of course have made some assumptions. I'm doing a personal blog not the ABC nightly news. I really don't have time to study other blogs out there to large degrees, but I'm happy to be corrected on anything I may be wrong about.

Zak's stuff is intelligent and insightful, moreso than what I do here for sure. But again, would he have an amount of followers that is getting close to rivaling that of Grognardia without the porn connection? I'm guessing there would not be the huge word of mouth. Nothing wrong with that. Sex sells. It does to me, anyway.

As for the video, well, I try to call them as I see them. Not enough there to really get a sense of things, so I will for sure check out the further installments and maybe do an update when I see more of what's going on.

  12. Brun, there's no reason you should have to wade through the blogosphere to find out what caused the controversy, but rest assured, the reason the blogs dropped had nothing to do with whether or not they liked or disliked Zak's blog. It was for far more involved reasons that don't even bear going into detail about. Two blogs dropped because of a mess over at the TARGA forum (that had a very slight bit to do with a discussion over the Zak video); one blog dropped out because he was mad one of the first ones did; another dropped out because the person writing it realized they worked in a public non-profit and linkbacks from sites might hurt the business they worked at. Stuff like that. But honestly the connection to Zak or his blog is tenuous and IMO this blow up would have happened anyway, eventually.

I wasn't very impressed with the first video but Zak has said they get better. I hope so cause it was actually pretty slow (but then again I think most filmed gaming sessions are boring). Camera work tried to be cool and avant garde or something but was awful.

  13. Bah, Zak Sabbath is nothing more then some snobby, eastcoast richkid who went to artschool and ended up screwing whores on camera while living in some dirty apartment in Hollywood with his bi-polar girlfriend. So what that he and his druggy friends play D&D. It's just the spectacle of such a bunch of losers that people are interested in this dumb show.

  14. Badmike: Thanks for the extra info. Lot going on out there that I am pretty ignorant about.
Grog: After looking up a Sasha video on Youporn and seeing what she did for a room full of guys (mostly a lot of the same skeevy, haggard and aging guys that have done extreme gang porn for over a decade), I was pretty nauseated. That type of gross-out porn that has become popular in the new millenium is one of the reason I like stuff from 20 years ago. If i was playing with her, all I could think of would be "jeez, this is that chick that did THAT."

As far as somebody saying Sasha had played before, I'm still not convinced. She appeared to be having some very basic concepts explained to her in the video.

  15. @Grog,
"snobby" absolutely, I have nothing but contempt for you.
    But
    "rich kid"?
    "druggy"?
What you know about me could fit between a thumb and a thumbnail. Fact-check your weak shit before you start typing.
